The countdown to the weekend is on. But what kind of weather can we expect over the next few days?
Autumn will show its full spectrum over the coming days. After a sunny Friday, experts at Geosphere Austria forecast increasing clouds and rain over the weekend, with a wet disturbance zone dominating on Monday before Tuesday brings friendlier but significantly colder weather.
On Friday, the weather will be sunny and dry under the influence of high pressure. Thin veil clouds decorating the sky locally will not have any significant impact. Only in inner Alpine basins and valleys, as well as in the lowlands, but especially in the east of the country, will there be fog or high fog of varying persistence. The chances of sunshine here will often remain low in the afternoon. In the morning, temperatures will range from minus three to plus seven degrees. Depending on fog or sunshine, temperatures will reach six to 21 degrees during the day. It will be warmest at medium altitudes in the west.
Weather at the weekend
Saturday will start with fog or high fog in the lowlands. Away from the typical fog regions, it will be sunny. However, some thicker clouds will move in from the southwest during the day, eventually bringing light rain in some areas. The clouds will only partially dispel the fog over the low-lying areas in the east of the country. Early temperatures will range from minus four to plus eight degrees. During the day, temperatures are forecast to rise from five to 20 degrees, with the warmest temperatures continuing to be in the west.
Sunday: Under the increasing influence of low pressure, a changeable day is ahead. After initial early morning fog in some valleys and basins, dense clouds and sunny spells will alternate throughout the morning. It will remain mainly dry for the time being. In the afternoon, dense cloud fields will move in from the south, and it will begin to rain on the southern side of the Alps and in the west. There will still be a few sunny spells on the northern side of the Alps, where it will only start to rain during the night. From Salzburg eastwards, it will remain quite sunny until the evening with only harmless veil clouds. Early temperatures: minus one to plus seven degrees, maximum temperatures: nine to 15 degrees.
Weather at the start of the week
At the start of the week on Monday, a disturbance zone will approach from the northwest. This means a cloudy and wet day is ahead. Most regions will be cloudy and wet from early morning until late evening. However, the precipitation will tend to decrease towards the evening. Sunny spells will remain the exception. The snow line will be above 2,000 meters above sea level in the morning and will drop to around 1,200 meters by the evening. Early temperatures will reach two to nine degrees, with daytime highs of seven to twelve degrees.
Tuesday will start with clear skies and relatively cold temperatures across most of the country. Morning fog is only expected in the mountains and especially in the far south. Everywhere else, the sun will shine mostly uninterrupted. This will continue into the afternoon, with thin veil clouds causing little disturbance. Only from East Tyrol to Upper Styria will the sun struggle to break through. Here, a few drops of rain or, above around 1,400 meters above sea level, isolated snowflakes are possible. Early temperatures will range from minus three to plus three degrees, with daytime highs of four to eight degrees.
